Three Signs It Is Time To Have Your Septic System Replaced With A More Modern System

Posted on

If you have an older home that is on a septic system, you may need to eventually have it replaced. Many things can be done with modern septic systems to help you manage waste water. Things like reuse of grey water can also help your home to be more environmentally friendly and help reduce water consumption. You may also want modern tanks that have alarms and are virtually leak proof.  Here are three signs that it is time to consider a septic system replacement for your home:

1. Constant Overflow Of The Drain Field

The drain field of your septic system is where liquid waste filters through the ground.  Many different things can damage the drain field of your septic system. It can be caused by pipes collapsing, roots from trees or too much solid waste getting into the system. If you notice that the ground where your drain field is installed is constantly wet, this is the first sign that it may need to be replaced or repaired. If your system is old, it may be a good idea to have the entire system replaced.

2. Sewage Smell In Your Home Or Property

If there are leaks in your septic tank or pipes, this can cause a sewage smell in your home or around your property. If it is the tank causing the problem, you will probably want to have it completely replaced.  This is a perfect time to upgrade your entire system as well, which you may want to install a new drain field, or even have tanks installed to separate grey water to use for things like irrigation.

3. More Use Of System Due To Expansion Of Home

You may also use your system more if you have done an addition, finished a basement or other expansions with more plumbing installations. This can also create more strain on a system that may have been designed for a much smaller home. If you have expanded your home, and find that you are needing septic and plumbing maintenance more often, it may also be a good idea to replace the septic system with a larger one that can handle the extra use.

These are some of the signs that it may be time for you to have your septic system replaced. If you need to have your septic system repaired, contact a septic service, like Sullivan Septic, ask them about these problems, and if they think it may be time to replace your entire system.
